ubuntu

So over the weekend, I finally got a lot of housework done.  Cleaning the toilet and mopping the floors?  Not quite.  More like consolidating my home servers and finally getting down to installing linux on my main machine for use as my primary OS.  I first narrowed the list down to Ubuntu 8.04 and Fedora Core 9 because both offer large support communities and the maintenance releases are fairly frequent.

I tried installing Ubuntu first, but ended up having some difficulties while installing the proprietary Nvidia driver.  Then i installed FC9 without a hitch.  Everything ran very smooth and I was even starting to like the yum update manager.  Then I realized that I had left the power cable to the video card unplugged while installing Ubuntu, so just to satiate my curiousity, I reinstalled Ubuntu and PRESTO!  It worked flawlessly.

I’m going to write up an article some time this week that goes into finer granularity concerning my Ubuntu 8.04 install and customization.  Until then, I’m still searching around for linux replacements to accomplish all my common tasks and needs…

  1. You know, I don’t know much about Lighttpd but now that you say it, I’ll probably test it out. Damn you, like I have that much time on my hands…

Oh, and I think I convinced myself to completely switch to Linux at my day job – my fellow designers think I’m real crazy…a couple of them didn’t even know what linux was? What the hell? You devote your career to working with a computer but you cry when photoshop crashes? Crazy designers.

Off hand, our company was voted in computer world’s top 100 i.t. companies to work for so if you ever feel like ditching d.c. i could hook you up! You’d be a good developer to have on board. At least you’ve heard of web standards and semantics unlike some of the people I work with.

  2. Damn Brad. I had no clue you were that computer literate. I don’t really know any other designers that could install windows, let alone linux! haha! Ubuntu is pretty nice though. I’ve used it before in test installs and for one of my home servers (which are now both consolidated into one server running win2003). I’m still setting up my development environment. So far, I’ve just got monodevelop up and running for .NET dev, but I’ll probably install eclipse/aptana later on tonight. What are your feelings towards Lighttpd versus apache2?

  3. I use ubuntu and had 0 problems setting it up – that included a local lamp server for development, Eclipse/Aptana (my coder of choice) and a shit load of software – gimp, inkscape, fontforge) and it only took me a couple hours to figure out how to use the terminal to set the permissions for the local development. Welcome aboard and enjoy!
